Background: "Laurie"
a brilliant, feminist, intellectual begins to question the things
she has passionately believed in when she finds herself pit against
an equally brilliant, conservative, male, college student. When
she accuses him of plagiarizing a paper on KING LEAR, "Third"
fights back, at her and the system. Through opposing viewpoints,
Laurie is confronted with the realities of the time she lives in.
The personal insight she discovers through self-questioning, and
the loved ones who surround her, will help to take her into the
"third" part of her life's journey.
This play is satiric, sarcastic, poignant and
very realistic. It was Ms. Wasserstein's last play before her death.
