Nick Sampson and Andrea Spitz, Proof, by David Auburn, directed by Norman SeltzerWinner of the 2001 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award, Proof is only the second play written by David Auburn and his first for Broadway. The play brilliantly weaves the dynamics of family relations, the roots of mental illness and the intricate complicities of mathematical proofs into a profound and inspired study of the human mind and heart. Auburn minimizes the math and maximizes the story of a family. He said in an interview: “I think in a way the play is dealing in a heightened way with emotions that a lot of people feel about their families - that I think everyone in some ways both worries and hopes to be like their family, to inherit traits they admire and also to avoid being in some ways -- following in patterns that may be they don't like as much.”

On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father Robert, a famous mathematician. In the course of the play, she must deal with her own volatile emotions; the arrival of her estranged sister, Claire; and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks that her father left behind. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father's madness—or genius—will she inherit?

Maura Stadem, Casey Jones & Andrea Spitz, , Proof, by David Auburn, directed by Norman SeltzerThe New York Daily News wrote that Proof "…combines elements of mystery and surprise with old-fashioned storytelling to provide a compelling evening of theatre… Proof is a smart and compassionate play of ideas."
